During NAIDOC Week, our students enjoyed a week of wonderful learning experiences that deepened their understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

Local Indigenous Elder, Uncle Mark, shared his wisdom, stories, and music with our students. He spoke about caring for the environment, showing respect, living in balance, understanding kinship, honouring culture and community, and the meaning of a Welcome to Country. He asked students who they believe should be respected, and they thoughtfully replied: Elders, friends, family, and community. Uncle Mark described his role as a connector and welcomer, sharing heritage and wisdom with those who live on his traditional country. He played the didgeridoo and led the students in traditional dances, filling the room with rhythm and joy.

When speaking with Secondary students, Uncle Mark encouraged them to live with gratitude, serve others with diligence, and trust that God can use their lives to bring hope to many.

Our Primary students also enjoyed an engaging session with Jarrod Harbrow and the Gold Coast Suns Indigenous Program Team. Students learned about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, the connection between AFL and a traditional Aboriginal game, and other fascinating cultural insights. The team read "Yalgan Sun," a beautiful story by Aunty Candace written especially for the Gold Coast Suns. Our College library received a hardcover copy of the book, and every student received their own softcover version to take home. The session finished with didgeridoo music and dances for boys and girls, creating a fun and memorable experience.

It was a week of learning, celebration, and connection. We are grateful to Uncle Mark, Jarrod Harbrow, and the Gold Coast Suns Indigenous Team for sharing their time, stories, and culture with our College community.
