Growth does not always happen in perfect conditions. Sometimes it looks like setting up camp in the rain, figuring things out as you go and learning to laugh along the way. That was the experience for our Year 9 students on their first Challenge Program adventure.

Students completed an overnight camping experience designed to build practical skills, independence and teamwork. Students put together their packs and equipment, set up their own campsites, prepared simple meals and learned the basics of outdoor safety and responsibility. It was hands-on learning that required initiative, cooperation and perseverance.

As the weather reminded everyone, not everything goes to plan. Tents got wet, gear was tested and students had to adapt. Yet these moments often became the most memorable, as students supported one another, solved problems together and discovered they could handle more than they expected.

“Challenge shows that everyone can learn to move on from things they don't want to do, and grow from the experience together. It's pretty rewarding." - Rose

"Challenge opens our eyes to what it's like and teaches us to be prepared. It definitely strengthened our bonds together and I think we're closer now." - Timothy

The following morning, students headed out for a beach hike, a quieter moment in the program that gave space for reflection and connection. Walking together, students had the chance to slow down, talk and take in the natural beauty around them.

The Year 9 Challenge Program is designed to stretch students over the course of the year, helping them develop resilience, practical skills and a deeper sense of independence. Experiences like this first camp set the tone, reminding students that growth often comes through stepping into the unknown, working together and learning along the way.

"My advice for next year's Year 9s is to double check your packing, and definitely bring a rain jacket." - Timothy

“For next year's Year 9s my advice is to just keep going. It's going to make really good memories for your class." - Rose
